California’s Top-performing Airport for On-time Departures Ends 2024 on a High Note

SJC welcomed over one million passengers in December 2024

San José, Calif. – Over 1 million passengers traveled through San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) in December 2024—a 4.9% increase compared to December 2023. This growth elevated SJC's total passenger count for 2024 to nearly 12 million, reflecting the Airport's ongoing appeal as a key Bay Area travel hub.

In addition to passenger traffic, overall aircraft operations rose by 2.6%, Airport parking transactions increased by 4.5% and ground transportation activity saw a significant 17.5% boost in December compared to the prior year.

“SJC continues to exemplify excellence as a key gateway to our region and City,” said San José Mayor Matt Mahan. “The passenger numbers, expanded airline services and advancements in sustainability reflect SJC’s commitment to providing world-class travel options while supporting our community and local economy.”

“SJC’s 2024 accomplishments highlight the incredible dedication of its team and the importance of its contributions to our City’s economic growth and environmental leadership,” said San José City Manager Jennifer Maguire. “From increasing passenger traffic to earning recognition as a top-performing Airport, SJC continues to set a high standard for the travel experience it offers.”

“As always, I want to thank our community for choosing to 'Fly Simple' through SJC,” said Mookie Patel, Director of Aviation. “Our team is committed to providing the best travel experience, and we’re excited for a new year filled with additional routes, new dining and shopping options, and continued investments in making SJC the easiest airport for Silicon Valley travelers.”

In 2024, SJC celebrated its 75th anniversary with numerous achievements:

  • Frontier Airlines returned to SJC
  • Spirit Airlines added new routes and increased frequencies
  • ZIPAIR enhanced its service to Tokyo Narita (NRT)
  • Expanded food and beverage and retail offerings
  • Launched a comprehensive emergency response program
  • Inaugurated the new Facilities Administrative and Fleet Maintenance Buildings
  • Upgraded to Level 2 certification in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program, furthering the Airport’s commitment to sustainability under the Climate Smart San José initiative

Adding to these accomplishments, SJC was recognized by Cirium’s 2024 On-Time Performance Review as California’s top-performing on-time airport and ranked sixth globally in the medium airport category.

Looking ahead, SJC travelers can anticipate even more nonstop destinations, expanded global connectivity, enhanced transportation options and additional amenities to make every journey through the airport seamless and enjoyable. Already this year, Delta Air Lines announced the reintroduction of daily nonstop service to Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas (LAS) after a five-year hiatus. Additionally, Delta is relaunching seasonal nonstop flights to Detroit Metro Airport (DTW). Southwest Airlines is also enhancing its presence at SJC with a new nonstop route to Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).
