Simple Steps to Getting Your Real ID Before the May 2025 Deadline

October 4, 2024

California Real ID

PSA TRAVELERS: If you plan to fly anywhere within the U.S. after May 7, 2025, you’ll need a Real ID!

First off … What’s a Real ID? Think of it like an upgraded, federally compliant version of your regular driver’s license or ID with a California grizzly bear with a star. Beginning May 7, 2025, it will be required to get on domestic flights or visit places like military bases and federal offices. If you don’t plan to fly or visit those places, you’re fine with your current license or ID.

Now, let’s walk you through getting one step-by-step!

(1) Gather Your Documents
Before you head to the DMV, you’ll need to gather a few documents. Here's what you'll need to bring:

  • A. Proof of who you are: ONE identity document that includes your full name (first, middle, last) and date of birth. This could be your U.S. passport, birth certificate, or green card. Basically, something official that proves you're you.
    • i. If your current name isn’t the same as what’s on your proof of identity, bring documents like a marriage certificate or court order to show the change.
  • B. Proof of where you live: TWO different documents that show your California mailing address. This could be a utility bill, state or national bank records, insurance documents (medical, dental, vision, home, rental, vehicle), rental agreement, mortgage statement, or tax return.
    • i. If you use a P.O. Box, one document MUST show both your P.O. Box and physical (residence) address and one document may show only the P.O. Box.

(2) Get a Head Start … Start Your Application Online
Save time and start your Real ID application online before you even step into the DMV. You’ll still need to visit the DMV in person, but this will make things quicker when you get there. Click here to get started.

(3) Time for the In-Person Part … Go to the DMV
Once you’ve filled out your online application and gathered your documents, it’s time to head to your local DMV. Find your nearest office here.

Pro tip: make an appointment online! You can do so here – you can also check the current wait time before you go.

When you get to the DMV, they’ll take your picture and scan your fingerprints. You’ll also need to pay a small fee.

(4) Wait for Your Shiny New Real ID to Arrive
After your DMV visit, your Real ID will arrive in the mail within about two weeks. While you wait, you’ll get a temporary paper version you can use until the real deal shows up.

That’s it! Getting a Real ID in California is as simple as flying through SJC once you know what to do. Just gather your documents, fill out the online form and visit  the DMV for your appointment.

Soon you’ll be ready for your next flight out of SJC!
