ARFF at San Jose International Airport

At Mineta San Jose International Airport, we have a specialized team of firefighters trained specifically to handle Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting, often abbreviated as ARFF. Located just downwind from Terminal B, their specially-equipped Fire Station 20 is staffed by San Jose Fire Department personnel 24/7/365. We spent a day with a Fire Captain and his team to learn more about the station’s state-of-the-art firetrucks and what the day-to-day life is of a SJC firefighter. Enjoy this glimpse into their current facility, their enormous responsibilities, and what it means to be an airport firefighter.

Grand Opening of Boarding Gates 31-36

On June 13, 2019, we officially opened the doors to our new Interim Facility housing Gates 31-36. SJC staff and City leaders were joined by partners from Hensel Phelps and Southwest Airlines to commemorate the occasion, a momentous milestone for Silicon Valley’s growing airport.

Zero Emissions Outside, New Bus Smell Inside

Springtime at SJC brought April showers, May flowers, and green buses. San José Mayor Sam Liccardo led the commissioning of our brand-new fleet of 10 battery-electric, zero-emission buses. Passengers shuttling between SJC’s parking lots, rental car center, and terminals have another reason to feel good about choosing Silicon Valley’s airport for this important investment in ebuses which are reducing emissions along their journey.

Violin at Gate 17

Passengers find all sorts of ways to kill time while waiting to board flights here at SJC, Silicon Valley's airport. Ben from South San Jose pulled out his violin before heading to Detroit.

SJC Turns 70

Time has flown by since February 1, 1949 when dedication ceremonies of the San José Municipal Airport were held to welcome the first commercial flight – a Southwest Airways DC-3 with two pilots, seven passengers and 2,550 baby chickens. Only the chickens got off at San José; the human passengers continued to Los Angeles. In celebration of our 70th birthday on 2/1/19, watch SJC grow and change through the decades.

Go Somewhere

Adorable kids, cute puppies, heart-warming family reunions, you name it. Every day at SJC brings new stories. Passengers are constantly posting on social media great photos and videos of their travels through our airport. Check out some recent examples, used with permission.
